Bird box 2007 - page 3

16th May 2007 - Day 17. The sizes of the chicks varies a lot. The bigger ones have nearly full plumage which they are constantly preening. All the chicks are getting plenty of food and hopefully will all fledge. Their diet has been - caterpillars, spiders, flying insects, grubs, ants (have seen one parent collecting them off the ground), and fat ball.

Click to play video 19th May - Day 20. The chicks vary a lot in size and attitude. Although some of them are jumping up to the entrance hole maybe the parents are waiting until they are all ready for leaving the nest before they entice them out. 940kb

21st May - The time has come for the young to leave the nest. Noticed this morning that the nest did not look as crowded as usual. Did a quick head count and there were only 7 young left in the nest. Every now and again a chick would jump up to the entrance hole, wait a while and just fly out. By 8pm there were just 3 left. It's 8.30pm now and there are just 2 remaining.
Since the young started to leave the parents have been back to feed the young left in the nest about every half hour. The female is still keeping the nest clean. The parents must be dividing their time between those young ouside and those still in the nest. It is almost 9pm now so I think the last two chicks will stay in for the night. Will set my alarm clock early to see if I can catch the last two "flying the nest".
22nd May 2007 22nd May - Day 23. Woke at 6am to find the last two young fast asleep. The mother did not sleep in the nest again.
