Dot's diary - August 2007

Sunday 5th August
Made good use of the beautiful weather this week. More building work done, leeks planted in the veg garden, ate baguettes filled with barbequed sausages, and what else? - oh yes we moved our shed!! We have two sheds and decided to have them side by side with a gap between so Dave can put a roof over the top and keep the ride-on mower and petrol mower underneath. We needed to turn one so that the ridges mathced up. It wasn't as difficult as we thought it would be - I put up our old frame tent and emptied everything out of the shed. We then we used long lengths of wood to lever the shed around inch by inch.

Sunday 12th August
Another good week weather-wise. I have been washing stone and Dave has been building as usual. Hoed the veg garden and sowed some lettuce and spinach seeds. Got the bikes out of the shed this week. Considering they have been shut away for at nearly three years they didn't need much attention. Dave cleaned them up and pumped up the tyres ready to cycle to our friend's place for a barbeque on saturday night. I stayed up tonight to watch the "Perseids" - a meteor shower that arrives every year. At around 2.30 a.m. I walked to the middle of our field and laid down on a sun lounger. It was a dark night as there was no moon but the sky was beautiful for a while. I counted 61 before it clouded over 40 minutes later.

Sunday 19th August
All the stuff is back in the shed now. Dave made a bookcase to sit on top of the cupboard in the kitchen (the one we bought last month). At last, all my cookery and gardening books are now in one place. Our veg garden has become too shady as we have oak trees growing in the bank. It was a shame but they had to go. It was a bit nervewracking as the tree was quite high and we needed to make it fall away from the veg plot. Dave cut while I held on to a rope that was fastened around the tree so that I could guide it in the right direction. It fell in exactly the right place! The wood has been cut and stacked ready to use in a couple of years time.

Sunday 26th August
I arrived in the UK today so I can be close by in case Kate's baby arrives early. Over the past week I have been busy getting ready and have sorted out a load of stuff to take to a car boot sale. Dave is still in France as he wants to carry on with the buiding work. The ferry was late leaving Roscoff but made up time and we were only 10 minutes late - having said that, it took a further 90 minutes before I was off the ferry and through customs!
