Wednesday 10th Feb 2016 – 209.23 miles
We started our day with a delicious English breakfast at the Butterleigh Inn – thanks Matt and Jo. Set us up for the day.
After breakfast we said our goodbyes to Matt and Jo and fellow guests Neil, Guy and Cringle the dog. We started walking about 9.15 and the fish and chip supper and cooked breakfast fueled our climb out of Butterleigh over the last few hills in Devon.
Very steep descent down to Tiverton.
We turned off just before the town to join the Great Western Canal. The prospect of walking on level ground at least for a day or so put a smile on our faces. Not only that but we had also reached the 200 mile point of our walk. Yay!
The walk along the canal was a pleasure and such beautiful weather too.
Quite a few people walking along the canal towpath. Charles who wished us well and also Tom, Chris and Sophie the dog. We gave them one of our flyers so they could follow our progress. Came off the canal at Halberton and walked down into the village. Took time out to eat our lunch in the porch of the church
then had a look around the church.
Reached Sampford Peverel around 2.45 planning to find somewhere for the night. Went into the hotel for a pot of tea and had a pint each in the pub. Sadly no-one could could help. We decided to crack on and continued along the canal for a few more miles until we found a place to wild camp overnight just off the towpath.
Dave cooked supper – garlic mushroom omelette with tomatoes – thanks Dave.
What a trip you are having ! Have been following with interest since we met in St Newlyn East and thinking if you in this awful weather . Your route is very well planned round the pubs !!!! Safe onward journey to wherever you are heading today
Hi Val. Lovely to hear from you after all these miles and ‘pints’! 🙂 Full sun today after a frosty start to the day. Will update the blog when we next get wifi. Cheers dave and dot.
